Keeping Track

In order for a business to operate properly, it’s important for them to use efficient record-keeping practices.  Not only is it important to retrieve all the records, but also to keep it organized! Being an organized person myself, I find these tips to be very helpful when it comes to organizing company records.  Depending on the nature and extent of the business, you can always combine or divide categories.  It may be difficult to keep up with, however, it’s better to start at the beginning then having problems towards the end.  In an article I read on allbusiness.com, they give a list of the different categories most businesses will use:
  • Accounting and bookkeeping records.
  • Bank records.
  • Contracts.
  • Corporate records.
  • Correspondence.
  • Employee records.
  • Frequently used forms.
  • Intellectual property records.
  • Marketing and advertising records.
  • Permits and licenses.
  • Stock records.
  • Tax records.

Choosing My Career Path....

During my courses of the MBA Program I was constantly asked what I wanted to do after graduation. I didn't know! One thing I knew for certain is that I wanted my career to revolve around accounting. As general as that is, I have always felt comfortable with the concept and find it to be fascinating! The more I thought about it, and researched different careers, there was one specific career path that stood out to me. That career was a Controller. I read this article, "Controllership: The Other Accounting Career" and it answered a lot of questions I had regarding the job description of a Controller, the requirements, and how to achieve such a position! The article explains that doing a controller internship is the way to receive actual professional experience. I'd love to work with an experienced Controller of a company that I find to be interesting, so that I can work along with them and enhance the knowledge and experience I need to achieve a career as a Controller.

Target Prezi

For my Global Business Strategy class, we were instructed to do a strategic analysis on any large company. In my case, our group was chosen to do Target. As many people know, PowerPoint is very popular for giving presentations. However, one of the members in the team I was in found a website in which you can create presentations. This website is called Prezi! If you look through this presentation you will see how different it is from PowerPoint. To get familiar with Prezi, my advice would be to work with it for a while and you could easily see how it works!

After the Cap and Gown

I recently graduated as an MBA student at Utah State University Jon M. Huntsman School of Business in Logan, Utah. To be closer to my family, I decided to move to Janesville, Wisconsin after graduation. I have a Bachelors degree in Accounting and then received a Masters degree in Business Administration. I find that when many people hear the word "accounting", the first word that comes to their mind is usually "boring". I'd like to change that reaction! Accounting isn't only helpful, but it can also be pretty fun! For this blog I want to incorporate a lot of different topics that I learned throughout my MBA courses. I also want to educate people about accounting, and other business-related news and facts that I find to be fun and interesting!
